I think sometimes we apologize for the wrong things like loving too passionately and knowing too well that hearts were meant to be hurt. I remember I said sorry to the first girl who broke me because I was trying to protect her from my bleeding shards. I remember how I dug my voice up from under gravel and dust and I apologized for how it sounded through tears and snot as I tried to muster a goodbye. I remember how I asked for a pardon every time I hid myself under blankets and rocks of resentment and tissues stained from crying. I carved the word ‘mistake’ onto every single bone of my body because there seems to be no other way to explain why I am so sorry for expressing the best parts of myself. Sometimes we apologize for the wrong things, but I am learning that I do not need to repent every time I open my heart up only to find pain; sometimes it’s hard not to blame ourselves but I am learning that I do not need to excuse myself for being human.
