Internal Biases are really important to deprogram. Being an ally means having to consciously fight to deprogram these biases that you benefit from that you may not agree with but still have. In conversations about oppression, we should not have to defend you and recentering the conversation on you perpetuates the issue

(i understand that as someone who benefits from the oppresion of every single one of these groups, i might have it wrong, feel free to correct me if I do. this may also get a little confusing because I’m going to try to generalize this to apply to all of the categories. if something doesnt make sense let me know and I can try to clarify) this is the way I see it: I agree with both Kat and the graphic, but I agree slightly more with the graphic. this is why: yes all of the unoppressed get benefits but they are not necessarily the ones instigating and/or responsible for the oppression of a group. therefore i see it as unfair to blame them for it. now I understand that the oppressed see that unfairness as something really stupid considering that they are being oppressed, and I agree with them.

However, I think it is within the interest of the oppressed to make sure they don’t offend the unoppressed while trying to end oppression and to change the views that the unoppressed have of said oppression. I don think this is important because it is fair, I think it is important because we don’t live in a perfect world. And tbh to fight oppression, you’re going to need all the help you can get. which means the less people you offend or push away  the more potential supporters you have. there are many people out there who, if even slightly offended by something will decide they don’t want to support a movement at all. it’s your choice on whether you think that is a good idea or if you feel like offending the unoppressed isn’t a big deal. just don’t force your choice down other people’s throats, because they also get to make their own choice.

“However, I think it is within the interest of the oppressed to make sure they don’t offend the unoppressed while trying to end oppression ”

This is abusive and you do not see it because you are part of the majorty. Telling me to quiet myself, speak to you politely and to soften the blow when discussing rape forced sterilization and murder only recenters majority groups while moderating how we discuss pain. You identify with the graphic more because you do not know what it feels like to be on the other side of the table. The graphic is defending you and you are using it to curate how we discuss these issues. Ton be blunt, we have every reason to be angry and every reason to be upset. You are not guilty of the creation of these biases but you are complicit when you know they exist and then feel the need to project your standards which are ultimately informed by supremacy onto an oppressed class. The reality is that we have never been able to do the same and we will never be able to do the same. Me shouting down a cis person for misgendering someone will not compare to the systems in place that deny trans people medical care. Ultimately in a society informed by certain types of supremacy it is easier for you to quietly perpetuate these things and not be aware. In truth you need to question and challenge yourself. You need to be willing to be uneasy and to accept that you feel that way because of how you were socialized and that these things are learned, they can be unlearned and you unlearning them means you can teach other generations to unlearn them and this world will become a better place because of that harsh introspection you’ve done.

For those confused,
You do not have the right to decide how an oppressed person can express them self to a non-oppressed person. That is one privilege you do not own, no matter how politely you voice the wish to have it.

If you take offense to someone voicing their issue and decide that the entire movement they are a part of no longer deserves your attention, you are an oppressor. And the worst kind. You have made a conscious choice that your discomfort however momentary is more important than the difficulties they have been facing all their lives. You don’t like being yelled at? Try this: I apologize, I did not understand…

I’ve used it, and yeah it sucks to apologize but not more than being oppressed. As a Black Cis, Bi Woman, I am happy to shade the hell out of anyone who has something rude to say but on the chance that I have offended someone, i am more than happy to do my best to correct my mistake and be understanding. Not try- do. I will be understanding, because I would expect someone who is an actual human to do that for me. Try that.

Thank you
